    Don’t miss Cowspiracy, reception and movie, free!

    ON TUESDAY APRIL 30, from 7-9:30 pm, Doc Your World is hosting its own special
    Cinema Slapdown. If you haven’t attended a Slapdown yet, basically, a well-known
    though controversial film is screened. In this case, “Cowspiracy,” a documentary
    following filmmaker Kip Andersen as he uncovers the most destructive industry facing
    the planet today – and investigates why the world’s leading environmental organizations
    are too afraid to talk about it. Following the screening, two debaters, one who loves it
    and the other who doesn’t, will debate against each other and the audience which will be
    moderated by Referee Michael Caplan.

    For this Slapdown, the discussion will focus on our role and responsibilities as
    consumers and how that affects the planet. Come and see Harrison Cothran who
    supports a pro meat lifestyle vs Bianca Doman who supports not eating animal
    products.

    Beforehand, there will be a reception with food and drinks available for the
    public as well as a sale hosted by the Human Rights course at Columbia where profits will
    be donated to RefugeeOne, an organization that resettles hundreds of refugees fleeing
    war, persecution, violence, and genocide from around the world. You won’t want to miss
    it. Come for the screening – stay for the fight – fun and free!

    2019 DocYourWorld: Human + Nature

    Third Annual DYW Festival?!

    AFTER A HIATUS in 2018, the student-run Documentary Film Festival, DocYourWorld, is back with its most ambitious collection of screenings, panels, and showcases yet!

    Columbia College Chicago is hosting this two-day long summit on April 29th through the 30th. The event kicks off at noon with a screening of The Skatepark: Concrete Dreams, a documentary series directed by Nick Nummerdor of Little Cabin Films. Nummerdor will be making an appearance and will follow up with a second screening of a different short form piece entitled Hill Climb.

    The day follows suit with a Student Showcase, screening a collection of films created by members of the DocYourWorld team. After the Student Showcase, the event moves on to the Nature section with a panel of nature documentarians and photographers. Picking up steam, the event moves from the Nature panel to Chicago Activism, with a talk from Chicago’s most active social justice filmmakers to share their work and passion for activism. The event will also have a panel discussing Different Mediums of Documentaries, a panel that emphasizing the versatility of documentary. The final panel that is presenting at DocYourWorld is the Faculty-Student Collaboration showcase with Ruth Leitman (Lady Parts Justice) and Michele Hoffman-Trotter (Microcosm). The two Columbia faculty will be sharing their most current projects and talk about their experiences so far.

    A reception catered by Oasis Cafe will transition the main event of DocYourWorld 2019: A Screening of Won’t You Be My Neighbor with keynote speaker, Caryn Capotosto, ’99 Columbia College Chicago alumna and the film’s producer.

    Day 2 of DocYourWorld 2019 starts with a Docs in Progress showcase from 10:00am to 3:00pm. Another reception from 6:00pm to 7:00pm will prepare guests for the event closer, a Documentary Slapdown of Cowspiracy. The screening will be followed by a debate, refereed by Michael Caplan. A controversial film about veganism that will expose a lot of beef. “Come for the film, stay for the fight”.

    DocYourWorld 2019 is projected to be the biggest one yet. An ambitious comeback to put this once annual documentary summit back on Chicago’s radar.

    “Won’t You Be My Neighbor” producer and ’99 Columbia College alumna Caryn Capotosto comes to DocYourWorld to present her documentary

    DIRECTLY FROM LOS ANGELES, Caryn Capotosto is coming to DocYourWorld to screen “Won’t You Be My Neighbor,” documentary she produced. Capotosto will be available for a Q&A after the screening, Monday April 29, 7-9:30 pm. Film Row Cinema, 1104 S. Wabash Ave, 8th floor. FREE

    Caryn Capotosto is an award-winning documentary producer known for Won’t You Be My Neighbor, the acclaimed Mister Rogers documentary that garnered accolades including an Independent Spirit Award, a Gotham Audience Award and a Critics Choice Award for Best Documentary.

    She received a 2016 News and Documentary Emmy Award Award for her role as Co-Producer on Best of Enemies and she was Associate Producer on the Academy Award and Grammy Award-winning documentary, 20 Feet from Stardom (2013). Her feature docs include Afghan Cycles (Executive Producer, 2018),  The Music of Strangers: Yo-Yo Ma and The Silk Road Ensemble (Associate Producer, 2015), and Filmage: The Story of Descendents / ALL (Co-Producer, 2014).

    Other recent projects include the documentary series’ Ugly Delicious (Executive Producer, 2018) and Shangri-La, slated to air on Showtime in 2019.
