Film, Television and Animation Portfolios:  What should they look like?

Film and Television portfolios – what you can show is key to what you should include. For Cinema Art + Science and Television students – your portfolio is online, hosted on a website. If you are looking for a platform to host your portfolio, we have a lot of references for you. Check out this link and scroll to “website hosting”.

In the
film and television industry, its all about what you have to show.  You want to have photos of sets, samples of scripts
you have written and shot (if applicable) and a REEL. Reels are industry standard, and everyone can have one. Not everyone
needs one, but if you can put
together clips of projects you’ve produced, sound-mixed, etc. – why not?

Professionals
want to see what you can do.

Writing
and Screenwriting Majors:
Samples of your writing should be on a website. Even better if what was
written was filmed against the script. Other ideas are
to have re-writes, short stories, etc. to show your skills. Check out these Alumni examples: Dustin Pellegrini and AJ Sheeran.

Producing
Majors:
 A reel
isn’t necessary, but it’s good to have one on your website. Have a
robust resume, film stills and trailers from films and television projects you produced. Also include your
contact info, bio, and IMDB link if you have one. Here are examples of television producer reels from pro Brittany Terrell,  and David
Freid
.

General/Multiple
focus:
Samples
of work, stills from films you worked on, contact info, bio, and resume. Examples from current student Bianca Panos
Pictures
and Alumni Courtney Aubrecht.

Directing
Majors:
 You
must have a reel highlighting your work, as well as clips from
projects, contact info, bio, and resume.  Your reel can be 3-5 minutes long,
and include longer clips with lower thirds featuring the title of each film. Examples from Alumni Al Benoit and Television
Director Brad Turner

Cinematography/Videography
Majors
: You
must have a reel highlighting your work, as well as clips from
projects, contact info, bio, and resume. Your reel can be 2-3 minutes, and be
a montage of your best shot work. Check out Alumni AJ Young, current student Bryce Drobny, and Alumni Henry Melendez.

Production
Design Majors
:
Having stills or creating a reel highlighting your work is essential. Your work speaks volumes. Include work from film, television and
theater. Also include your resume, contact info and bio. Check out Bianca Battaglia’s work, and professional Production Designer
Michael Shaw’s portfolio.

Post
Production Majors
: You must have a reel highlighting your work, as well as clips
from projects, contact info, bio, and resume.  Your reel can be 2-3 minutes and be a montage, or select clips to highlight your post production skills. For Editors – it is essential that your
reel be well edited! Also include your resume, contact info and bio. Check out Alumni Clare Levinson’s website and reel.

Animation Majors: You need a reel and you want to highlight your best work, software knowledge, and skills!  Check out student Adrienne Bazir and professional Julia Pott for inspiration.
