Columbia College Chicago Theatre Department faculty, alumni, and students are involved in The Hypocrites‘ keenly anticipated production of American Idiot–the Chicago premiere of the influential rock musical by Green Day, Billie Joe Armstrong, and Michael Mayer.

The ensemble includes alumni Dakota Hughes (BFA, Musical Theatre Performance, 2015), a graduate of the Musical Theatre Performance BFA program, and Whitney Dottery (BA, Musical Theatre, 2015), an alumna of the Musical Theatre BA program, as well as current Musical Theatre Performance BFA student Michael Kurowski. Columbia College Chicago Music Department composition student Jeremy Gentry is an understudy.

Theatre Department faculty member Andra Velis Simon is the show’s musical director; Spencer Meeks (BA, Musical Theatre, 2015) is associate musical director. Theatre faculty member Heather Gilbert is designing the lights, with Theatre Design alumnus John Kelly as associate lighting designer. Gabby Welsh, (BA, Technical Theatre, 2014), a graduate of the Theatre Department’s BA program in technical theatre, is stage manager.

Based on punk rock band Green Day’s Grammy Award-winning album of the same name, American Idiot follows three lifelong friends, forced to choose between their dreams and the safety of suburbia in a post 9/11 world. American Idiot runs August 28-October 25 at The Den Theatre, 1329 N. Milwaukee, in Chicago’s Wicker Park neighborhood.
