SAGA Innovations Tutor Fellowship (CHICAGO, NEW YORK)

The SAGA Tutors program is a full time, in-school professional math tutoring opportunity. We are on the brink of a new movement in American public and are looking for the next group of relentless leaders to bring the organization to the next level.

Unlike traditional, often disconnected tutoring that happens outside of school hours, SAGA tutoring occurs as a stand-alone class period and is built into the school day (as an elective course for credit). Each Fellow is assigned a personal caseload of 14 students and will work with the same students every day in small-groups (1:2 is our standard) as well as communicate with their parents weekly.

We are actively seeking math tutors to serve students in Chicago Public Schools and in New York City Public Schools. Tutors will start in August for training, and serve until the last day of school in June 2017. This work builds off of a randomized clinical research study in Chicago by the University of Chicago Crime Lab, which was published by the National Bureau of Economic Research in 2013 and 2014, where students gained up to 2.5+ years of math growth in one year of high dosage math tutoring. Put differently, high-dosage tutoring decreased the black-white test score gap by 60% within a six month period. This research shows that it is possible to make a difference in the academic trajectory of students in high need urban communities—it is not too late

Tutors must have at least a bachelor’s degree. The stipend for this service is $18,500 for 10 months of work; tutors get all school vacations and federal holidays (about 25 days off), access to health care, dental care, and can opt into a flexible savings accounts.
