The Art History Senior Seminar at Columbia College Chicago will moderate a special panel of curators, scholars, and art advocates who will share their professional experience, vision, and recommendations for exploring careers. This will be an invaluable opportunity for all Columbia students and alumni interested in working in Fine Art fields to glean critical insights, learn about interconnected roles and responsibilities, and understand various types and levels of involvement in the professional art community. Director of 6018NORTH

Van Eck is the Founder and Artistic Director of 6018North, an artist-centered, nonprofit venue in Chicago and itinerant international platform for innovative art and cultural work, commissioning artists to perform, create site-specific installations, and host communal events in transformative ways. As curator with the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, for 13 years, she was responsible for over 70 major exhibitions with a common emphasis in audience engagement and community.

DANIEL SCHULMAN
Program Director of Visual Art at DCASE

Schulman is the Program Director for Visual Art at the City of Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE), where he is responsible for exhibitions at the Chicago Cultural Center and directs the city’s Public Art Program. He has over 25 years of curatorial experience at the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the Art Institute of Chicago, and has taught art history at The Cooper Union in New York, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Arts Program Manager, Arts Incubator in Washington Park

Hazel is the Executive Director of Sixty Inches From Center, an online magazine and archiving organization that advocates artists’ legacy-building along with awareness and accessibility to the Chicago Artists’ Archive. Hazel is also an independent curator, writer, and Arts Program Manager at the Arts Incubator in Washington Park, where she curates exhibitions and manages the residency program. She was previously a professional development manager at Chicago Artists Coalition, creating programs to help artists build sustainable careers.

DOUGLAS GABRIEL *
Art History Graduate Student, Northwestern University

Gabriel graduated from Columbia College Chicago in 2010 with a BFA in Fine Art, and spent two years in South Korea conducting independent research on Korean performance art of the 1980s while working as an English teacher. In 2013 he was accepted into the Art History Ph.D. program at Northwestern University in Evanston. His 2015 MA thesis considers diverse ways in which Korean artists responded to forces of globalization during the 1988 Seoul Olympics. He is currently developing his dissertation proposal and preparing for his Qualifying Examinations at Northwestern.
