A new play by Dawn Renee Jones, the Columbia College Chicago Theatre Department‘s administrative assistant and also a part-time faculty member, will receive a staged reading at the Goodman Theatre, Chicago’s premier institutional nonprofit theatre, on Sunday, July 16. As reported previously in this blog, Jones is a member of the Goodman’s 2016/2017 Playwrights’ Unit, a year-long residency program offered by Goodman in partnership with Chicago Dramatists. The performance of Jones’ play The Beauties is part of a series of readings of works by writers in the Playwrights’ Unit at the culmination of this season’s residency.
In The Beauties, a goddess with an anxiety disorder enlists the aid of her son to procure beauties for placement in the universe where needed. But when a rare and unusually beautiful maiden accepts the hand of a grotesque monster, mother and son are challenged to reassess their relationship to the superficially attractive. The cast includes Columbia College Theatre Department alums BrittneyLove Smith ’11 and Rachel Gabrielle ’14, both graduates of the Theatre Department’s Acting Program, and Theatre Department faculty member Barbara Robertson.
The performance starts at 2 PM in the Polk Rehearsal Room of the Goodman Theatre, 170 N. Dearborn, in downtown Chicago. Admission is free, but reservations are required. To reserve tickets, call 312-443-3800 or click here.
