The award is named in honor of the late Peter Lisagor, the Chicago Daily News’ Washington bureau chief from 1959 to 1976, who was one of the nation’s most respected and well-known journalists. The awards were established in 1977 by the Headline Club, the Chicago area’s independent chapter of the national Society of Professional Journalists, to inspire Chicago-area journalists to follow Lisagor’s outstanding example and to recognize truly superior contributions to journalism.
