The talents of Columbia College Chicago Theatre Department students and alumni are featured in holiday-season productions at some of the Chicago area’s top theatres. Among them:
Sophie Vitello, a senior in the Theatre Department’s BFA Program in Musical Theatre Performance, plays the Ghost of Christmas Past in A Christmas Carol at Metropolis Performing Arts Centre in the Chicago suburb of Arlington Heights. The Citadel Theatre Company in the northern Chicago suburb of Lake Forest is presenting Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, with choreography by Columbia College alum Jake Ganzer ’15, a graduate of the Theatre Department’s BA Program in Musical Theatre. Chicago’s Porchlight Music Theatre has extended its hit revival of the classic musical Gypsy, which now runs through December 29. The show’s cast includes Aalon Smith, Marvin J. Malone II, and Ariel Triunfo, all current students in the Columbia College Theatre Department’s Musical Theatre Program. Smith plays “Dainty June,” a teenage performer whose stage-struck mother is trying to make her talented daughter a star in 1920s vaudeville. Malone and Triunfo are in the ensemble, and Triunfo is also the production’s dance captain. Also in the cast are Columbia College alumni Elya Faye Bottiger ’17 and Michelle Huey ’17, both graduates of the Columbia College Theatre Department’s BFA Program in Musical Theatre Performance, and Jared David Michael Grant ’12, a graduate of the Theatre Department’s BA Program in Musical Theatre. The Wizard of Oz, running through January 6 at the Paramount Theatre in Aurora, features alums Leah Morrow ’05, a graduate of Columbia College’s BA Program in Musical Theatre, and Allyson Graves ’12 and Maria Montero ’18, both graduates of the Theatre Department’s BFA Program in Musical Theatre Performance. All three are members of the ensemble. In addition, Morrow, in her Paramount Theatre debut, is understudying the roles of Glinda and the Wicked Witch. The show’s music director and conductor is Kory Danielson, a former student in the Theatre Department’s Musical Theatre program.
