Columbia College Chicago Theatre Department alumni are in the cast and design team of We’re Gonna Die, presented by Haven Theatre Company for four Monday evening performances March 26-April 16 at Steppenwolf Theatre Company’s intimate, flexible 1700 Space.
Written by Young Jean Lee and directed by Columbia College Theatre Department faculty member Josh Sobel, the show received its Chicago premiere last spring from Haven Theatre Company in an acclaimed production, and is returning for a special limited engagement at the Steppenwolf venue.
Columbia College Theatre Department alumnus Spencer Meeks ’15, a graduate of the Theatre Department’s Musical Theatre BA program, is a cast member and also the show’s musical director. The production team includes alumni Mike Mroch ’11, a graduate of the Theatre Department’s Theatre Directing program (scenic designer), and Claire Chrzan ’11, a graduate of the Theatre Department’s Theatre Design program (lighting designer). Jon Martinez, a former student in the Columbia College Chicago Theatre Department’s Musical Theatre BA program, is the show’s choreographer. And Abhi Shrestha, a former student in the Theatre Department’s Theatre Directing program, is the assistant director.
Director Josh Sobel is artistic director of Haven Theatre, which was founded by Carol Cohen, a former Columbia College Chicago Theatre Department student. Cohen is also the benefactor of Columbia College Chicago’s Carol Cohen Award, established to assist Theatre Design or Technical Theatre students with expenses related to research projects within their studies.
A singer takes the stage, backed by her rock-band compatriots, to share Young Jean Lee’s life-affirming show about the one thing we all have in common: “we’re gonna die.” Drawing from true stories of people’s experiences with tragedy, despair and loneliness, this personal and rejuvenating play with live music reminds us that in our darkest, most isolated moments, we are not alone. We’re Gonna Die runs Mondays at 8 PM from March 26 through April 16 at Steppenwolf Theatre’s 1700 Space, located at 1700 N. Halsted, Chicago. For tickets, call 312-335-1650 or click here.
