Joshua Meehan

Music Composition for the Screen, MFA

My name is Josh Meehan, I am from Long Island, New York, and for as long as I can remember I have wanted to be a musician. Growing up in different rock bands, classical ensembles, and pit orchestras confirmed this desire every step of the way. Realizing I could combine my love of music with my passion for storytelling through TV/Movies/Video Games is what has led me to this program.

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT WHAT YOU WERE DOING BEFORE YOU CAME TO COLUMBIA.

Before I came to Columbia College Chicago, I was studying music for media at the University of Miami under Carlos Rafael Rivera, and in my free time I was competing in competitions with BisCaydence A Cappella Group.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE COLUMBIA FOR YOUR GRADUATE STUDY?

I chose Columbia for my graduate degree because of the extremely practical and robust program that Kubilay Uner has built. Being so immersed in the industry himself, he has designed a program to surround us with current industry professionals that understand the modern landscape of the profession.

TELL US ABOUT A PROJECT YOU’RE WORKING ON THAT YOU’RE EXCITED ABOUT.

Right now, I am extremely excited to be working on scoring an episode of “The Tom and Jerry Show” in class with the show’s Emmy winning composer, Vivek Maddala. Vivek has been an incredibly helpful and insightful mentor already, and I am eager to see how our attempts at scoring this episode turn out!
