David Neville
Music Composition for the Screen, MFA
I am currently pursuing my MFA in Music for the Screen, I earned my Bachelor’s degree in composition from Indiana University in 2020. I love composing for film and other media because of the possibility for the music to affect a larger number of people than if the same music was written solely for the concert stage. I also enjoy outdoor activities such as frisbee and swimming!
TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT WHAT YOU WERE DOING BEFORE YOU CAME TO COLUMBIA.
Before coming to Columbia I was pursuing my undergraduate degree, and right after completing said degree I moved on to graduate school. During my undergrad, I focussed on composing music for the concert stage rather than for film, so I was able to development my skills away from picture so that I could better understand the composition process as a whole rather than focusing solely on film from the beginning.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE COLUMBIA FOR YOUR GRADUATE STUDY?
I choose Columbia because of its vast Alumni network, real world practical learning, an internship in LA upon the program’s completion, and how much it just felt like him prior to even being offered a spot in the program.
TELL US ABOUT A PROJECT YOU’RE WORKING ON THAT YOU’RE EXCITED ABOUT.
I can’t narrow it down to just one project, I have the great fortune of working with many great/talented filmmakers and story tellers at Columbia and I am enjoying every second of working on all of them!
