No Wrong Choice

Can I be honest with you? We’ve had an amazing dialogue going on since I’ve started writing for this blog, and I think you’ll really appreciate this entry. So here’s the truth. It’s time for me to pick electives for next semester at Columbia College Chicago, and it’s driving me totally insane. There are so many great classes to choose from, and there is no way I can pick everything I want. I almost want to pull my dreads out…almost.

I have been sitting in front of my computer trying to make the hard decision between courses like the Assistant Director’s Workshop, Documentary Production Team, or Music Video Production. Cool right? I know. I keep thinking, “What if I choose the wrong class?” “What if that other class could be the best experience in my life?” “Should I choose Class A because I like the subject more or Class B because I think it may get me a job faster?”

I have questions, questions, and more questions. But this is good. These questions stem from possibilities. And that’s why I’m back in school: for possibilities.

I’m sure you’ve been in this position. You are at a pivotal moment in your life, and the next decision you make may drastically effect your next few years. This is when you have questions.

We recently invited admitted Film & Video graduate students to visit campus. They have questions. Some of my classmates are thinking about what projects or classes they wish to pursue. They have questions. Some of you are thinking about starting the application process. You have questions. It doesn’t matter how much research you do because in the end you have to go with your gut.

Now that I’ve had a chance to reflect, my gut is telling me things aren’t too bad. I’m confident that I’m in a win-win situation. And that’s why I’m at Columbia College Chicago. I’ve put myself in the position where any of the choices I make will help round out my film education. Oh… and I almost forgot. Assistant Director’s Workshop or Music Video Production? What do you think?
