From the Studio

For me, my studio is one of the best places in the world. I have found it so important and productive to have my own space away from home to work in. Often school consumes so much time and energy and brain-space that for me it becomes really necessary to create boundaries for myself — like, not working at home (too much), and really taking advantage of my personal workspace at school.

My studio is a little nest of things I love (old photographs, found images), things I’m working on (actual pieces), things that encourage me (letters of appreciation, old pieces that I thought worked well), and a mess of materials. When I sit down at my table in there, I have everything that I need on hand so that I can just start working. I get excited when I leave my house and head to school because I just can’t wait to get to my studio. I think that the presence of that sort of enthusiasm has really come from creating a place for myself to exist temporarily autonomously from both the pressures of school and the pull of home. It’s a little vacuum that allows me to produce and think. For me, as I’m sure you can already tell since I’m writing a post about it, that refuge is a really important one. So, with all of that said, it is now time for me to go to the studio where I’m sure that I’ll get a whole lot done!
