TV Review: Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist
We’ve all wondered what it’s like to hear other people’s thoughts, but what if you heard them in song form instead? NBC’s 2020 show Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist runs with this idea and let me tell you, it’s funny, weird, and satisfying all at the same time. Here’s the premise: people in normal day to day activities break into song to show how they’re feeling in the moment, but only tech master Zoey can see/hear their musical expression. Calling all MT students!! This show should most definitely be on your watch list. It features pop culture songs from all decades and musical numbers that resemble that of the 2016 hit La La Land . If you like spontaneous musical numbers, broadway style, this show is right on the money.
The show itself is produced extremely well. Well choreographed musical numbers, tons of songs that range from ballad to rap, and a well written script that weaves it all together. The character in the show make the whole situation seem flawless, like somehow cheesily singing in the middle of a workday in the office is supposed to happen, and it’s relatable. This is honestly a really cheesy show, but it’s well executed enough to overlook the cliche one liners that occasionally happen. The sets are beautiful, the main character Zoey is extremely relatable and there’s songs that we all know and love in this show. What could go wrong?
The cast: Jane Levy plays the confused coder Zoey, Skylar Astin plays her supportive best friend Max, Broadway star Alex Newell plays the overtly loud neighbor with a fantastic voice, and Gilmore Girls alum Lauren Graham plays the tough boss at Zoey’s Application company. Overall, this show is honestly great, it meshes the idea of something so complicated with something that everyone can relate to. If you want to watch, the premiere episode is on YouTube for free, and new episodes will air on Sundays starting February 16th at 8PM CT.
