Join SAAEC in Mindful Yoga
Join the Sexual Assault Awareness Education Committee (SAAEC) on Wednesday, April 15, 2020 at 1:00p.m. CDT for a virtual session on Mindful Yoga with instructor Kate Rice.
Kate Rice is an experienced yoga instructor with an extensive background in training trauma informed yoga to underserved populations including women incarcerated at Cook Country Jail, and women living in homeless shelters who have experienced sexual violence. Kate partners with organizations across the city through her organization Trauma Informed Yoga Chicago. Kate completed the Illinois’40-hour sexual violence crisis intervention training allowing her to teach workshops on trauma informed yoga to other yoga instructors.
This virtual event will begin with a 45-minute yoga practice. All parts of the session are optional and will be done while seated on a chair. A yoga mat is not required, but please make sure to wear comfortable clothing that will allow you to move.
Following the session, Kate will lead a discussion and answer questions on the topics below:
– yoga’s potential as a tool for self-care and healing from trauma and/or secondary trauma
– how and why a trauma informed yoga class differs from a “regular” yoga class.
– resources to bring tools from yoga into your life regularly.
The Session will be taught through Zoom which requires an internet connection and a device with camera and audio, though you may choose to turn your camera off. You’ll receive a link to register about 15 minutes before the workshop. Your name that you enter upon registration will be visible to others who join the class. If you keep your camera on, the group will be able to see you. You will enter your email to register, but that is only visible to me as the host.
If you are interested in this event or if you have questions, please contact Verron Fisher at vfisher@colum.edu on or before April 14, 2020 to RSVP.
