SPOTLIGHT ON: Wicked Week
It’s that time of year again! The air is colder, the nights are longer, and Halloween is creeping closer. So how does the average student go about getting ready for the spookiest of seasons? By attending Wicked Week, of course! This year’s Wicked Week is set to be the best yet, with everything from classic pumpkin decorating to the yearly Wicked Ball. Don’t miss your chance to take part in these gloriously ghoulish activities!
Wicked Week kicks off on Monday the 22nd with Mythical Creature Trivia + Lunch. Stop by Haus at 12:30 pm to enjoy food, brain teasers, and good company. Your knowledge of curious critters will be tested, so be sure to bring along a few of your most monstrously-minded friends to help you best the other teams.
On Tuesday, you can look forward to the return of Frankentoys! Have you ever dreamed of having your very own bespoke monster sidekick? Are regular plush toys just not freaky enough for you? Then head down to the North Reading Room in the library at 1 PM and join in on some stuffed animal destruction! The library will provide everything you need (including the plushy victims) to channel your inner Dr. Frankenstein.
If you’re in the mood for some more traditional halloween activities, then you’ll be excited for Wednesday’s Creative Creatures and Gorgeous Gourds event. The Workroom in 623 South Wabash will be hosting a pumpkin decorating extravaganza, so get ready to show off all your pumpkin painting skills. Both gourds and accoutrements will be provided, so all you have to bring is your creativity.
Wednesday’s festivities also include Waffle Wednesday: Unicorn Edition. This extra-special Waffle Wednesday event will feature unicorn-themed waffles, so be sure to stop by for the fanciful (and free) fare!
On Thursday, ShopColumbia will help students conquer one of the most daunting demons on campus: selling their artwork! If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by the idea of pricing and selling your art, then this info session is for you. The Mythical Giant: Selling Your Work Doesn’t Have to be Scary! will demystify the selling process. Be sure to stop by ShopColumbia at 12 PM if you want to slay your artist anxieties.
Thursday will also feature some of Wicked Week’s biggest (and spookiest) events: Wicked Ball and the Haunted House! The yearly Wicked Ball will be even more spectacularly spooky than the last, with enough music, food, and Halloween revelry to satisfy even the most disconcerting devils. Show up dressed as your favorite fairy, centaur, woodland beast, or forest dwelling creature. Ball attendees will dance in enchanted, magnificent splendor until the sun comes up (or at least from 7-11 PM) at HAUS in 623 South Wabash.
The Haunted House is set to celebrate everything great and ghoulish about horror cinema! Student Organizations and Leadership and Columbia’s student organizations have come together to host the fourth annual Haunted House. It’s going to be crawling with things that go bump in the night, screams of terror, and sinister beings that send shivers down your spine. Come up to the 11th floor at 600 South Michigan at 7-10 PM on both Thursday and Friday to get your fill of Halloween horrors!
The spooky splendor of Wicked Week will draw to a close with SPB Presents: Big Mouth. This installment of Big Mouth will feature an October-tinged set of song, dance, spoken word, comedy, and more. Whether you’re looking to join in on the fun or just enjoy some awesome student-created content, you’re sure to have a scarily good time. Sign up starts at 6 p.m., doors at 6:30, and the show runs from 7-10 PM.
