MAKE A MURAL: 2018 SFS Mural Competition

With Manifest 2018 just around the corner, you may be wondering how you can show the world your work and make the most of the end-of-year festival. If you’ve got an eye for visual arts and the motivation to leave your mark on the Columbia campus, Student Financial Services has an empty wall with your name on it. The 3rd annual SFS Mural Competition is looking for another awe-inspiring mural to add to their already impressive collection.

Past winners of the SFS Mural competition have used the opportunity as a chance to promote their work and get some much valued portfolio material. Last year’s winner, Illustration Major Lorena Montalvo, used her command of contrasting colors and powerful imagery to convey a sense of hope and perseverance. Zelda Galewsky, 2016’s SFS Mural Competition winner, used her whimsical illustrative style to celebrate the diversity and creativity that she valued during her time at Columbia. Both murals, and the empty wall that’s waiting for 2018’s winner, can be found outside the SFS offices on the 3rd floor of 600 S Michigan Ave.

If you want your work to be shown, create a proposal that encompasses this year’s Manifest theme, “Own It.” SFS defines “Own It” as “A reminder. An affirmation. As Columbia grads you are empowered with the creativity, knowledge and stewardship to take hold of this moment and charge towards a future you will make reality.”

Your proposal must include your design for the mural, examples of your past work, and an artistic summery. Make sure to submit everything by the April 8th deadline. Not only will the winner’s work be featured on the wall outside the SFS office, but they will also receive a $400 stipend! Applicants from all majors will be considered.
