SPOTLIGHT ON – WICKED WEEK

SPOTLIGHT ON – WICKED WEEK

As Halloween looms on the horizon, you’re probably wondering how you can get yourself into the holiday spirit. Should you dress up? Should you gorge yourself on fun-sized candy? Should you binge watch old episodes of Buffy The Vampire Slayer while gorging yourself on fun-sized candy? While those might seem like fine ideas, Columbia is offering tons of better ways to celebrate the spookiest of seasons.

Wicked Week, Columbia’s multi-event Halloween-themed festival, is in full swing. Students can take part in everything from pumpkin carving to tarot card readings, all right here on campus. With so many events to choose from, you’re bound to find something that will bring out your inner witch/wizard/non-gender-binary-magic-user.

Kicking off the week, Student Activities is hosting a pumpkin-carving extravaganza at 623 S Wabash. Attendees will get to show off their gourd butchering skills combined with their artistic prowess at the Pumpkin Parlor. The event will take place from 5 to 8 PM on the 24th in the Haus.

Also on the 24th, the Library will be hosting another round of Frankentoys. Students can channel their inner Mad Scientist as they create the plush monster of their nightmares. The Library will provide the materials to make your creature, including the stuffed animals you’ll get to dismember and then piece back together into your own Frankentoy. The event will take place from 1 to 4 PM in the North Reading Room on the third floor of the library.

On the 25th, students will have the opportunity to show off their vocal prowess during Great Voices of Vaudeville: An Evening of Columbian Karaoke. Come down to 731 S Plymouth Court from 5 to 8 PM and enjoy snacks, live music, and a little friendly competition.

For student who are curious about what the future holds for them, Student Activities is hosting Conjure Your Fate: A Tarot Card Hand Coloring Congregation on the 26th. Attendees will get to color their own tarot card deck, as well as have their futures prophesized in tarot readings. Tarot readings are limited and given on a first come, first serve basis, so don’t miss your chance to master your fate. The event will take place from 2 – 4 PM at 623 S Wabash in The Workroom.

After you have your fortune told, head over to Wicked Ball: A Night of Elegance, Pride, and Wonderment. Don your best gothic attire and enjoy music courtesy of The Columbia DJ Club. The party will be in full swing from 7 to 11 PM at 1104 S Wabash in the Conway Center.

To wrap up Wicked Week, the acclaimed Chicago Cabaret will be putting on a musical murder mystery spectacular on the 27th. The evening will include mocktails, music, and loads of interactive fun. Attendees will get to take on eccentric personas as they attempt to solve a murder before time runs out. The show will go on once at 6:30 and again at 8:30 PM at 623 S Wabash and will be seated on a first come, first serve basis.

Whether you choose to party at the Wicked Ball or slice up some squash at the Pumpkin Parlor, you’re guaranteed to get into the Halloween spirit. Just be sure to bring your student ID.
