SPOTLIGHT ON – DEPS
The Department of Exhibitions, Performances, and Student Spaces (DEPS) is a major part of campus and responsible for a number of Columbia’s most visible art galleries, student spaces such as HAUS and ShopColumbia, and the Wabash Arts Corridor programming and murals. For those who don’t know, HAUS is a lounge and performance space for students that can be reserved for performances, and ShopColumbia allows student to sell and display their work in a retail setting. All of these spaces often collaborate with course curriculum, faculty, campus events, and even independent students for exhibitions.
The four primary galleries of DEPS focus on different priorities, allowing students to portray their work but to also view work created from industry professional from around the world.
- The Hokin Project Gallery – 623 S. Wabash, 1st floor
The first and oldest gallery on Columbia’s campus, this highly visible space has a broad spectrum of uniquely changing work. Located just inside 623’s front doors, it’s easy to breeze into the gallery if you have a few minutes to spare before or after classes. The gallery operates under the hybrid management of DEPS and the Department of Business and Entrepreneurship. Right now, the gallery is displaying a project focusing on the Wabash Arts Corridor.
- The Glass Curtain Gallery – 1104 S. Wabash
This gallery is dedicated to showing work from established local, national, and international art professionals. Well known across the city, this gallery has featured an expansive variety of artwork, including last years Skillshot, a show that was completely dedicated to the process, art, and realm of pinball and pinball machines. The gallery even featured current and vintage pinball games that were free for students to play all day. Currently the gallery is hosting ¡Sí, Se Puede!, a show connecting the legacy of Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta and their work with the United Farm Workers Movement. The exhibition focuses on current artistic practices centering on education, history, acts of resistance, and community work in Chicago.
- C33 – 33 E. Congress – 1st floor
If you have ever wanted to put on your own show, then C33 is the place to look. C33 allows students the opportunity to exhibit their own short-term student exhibition. Students are welcome to submit proposals to DEPS to take advantage of the space through solo shows or collaborate efforts of a specific group of students. The application process is very competitive, but it is worth it to have independent control of the space for your own show. Exhibitions usually are showcased for a few weeks at a time, with time for installations and takedowns on either side. If you are looking to display your work, the C33 Gallery is open for submissions until November 1st. Click here to see the requirements and submit your application.
- The Arcade, 618 N. Michigan, 2nd floor
This gallery often times has a particular focus on new media and interdisciplinary art. The Arcade is also almost exclusively student displays, the exception being students who want experience in the world of art curation. DEPS supports Business and Entrepreneurship as well as Art History students who would like to learn how to curate and practice curating a gallery. The Arcade also plays host to the annual Albert P. Weisman Award Exhibition, an award that helps to fund creative endeavors for Columbia students.
One of the best parts about all of the spaces that DEPS has control over is that, because they are primarily student funded, all Columbia students have priority and the right of refusal when it comes to events and displays. DEPS is dedicated to being supportive of Columbia’s student body above all else.
If you are looking for something new to do on campus or just have some spare time, go take a look at these difference spaces that DEPS provides. They are always hosting new and exciting work that is guaranteed to change or expand your perspective.
