Navigating the Portfolio Center Website

Hi all, Maddie again.

In case you guys hadn’t noticed, last semester we updated our website. Not only is it easier to find things now, it’s also quite pretty. But still, none the less, finding what you need online can always be a struggle. Especially if you don’t even know what you need. Then you’re in a real pickle. (Fun Fact Side Note: The origin of the phrase “in a pickle” is not as interesting as one would hope.) So I’m here to show you my own recommendations of the top spots on our website with some quick scenarios.

Scenario 1: You’re in a hurry and totally forgot to print those mock business cards for your class on Friday. You also promised your hip barbershop quartet band that you’d pick up some CD cases for your new albums that you’re putting together. AND Rob Funderburk, your creative industry liaison, recommended that you get a new portfolio box. But you don’t know where to get any of this stuff!

Well good thing we have a page called Where to Get Stuff. It’s an easily accessible page that lists stores and websites to meet all of your portfolio needs. Even places with student discounts. I personally have it bookmarked on my computer. Just in case. You really never know.

Scenario 2: You want to come in to the Portfolio Center and meet with somebody but you don’t actually know what the Portfolio Center does. Or who to see. Or what to ask when you get here. And maybe you’re just a little too shy to ask.

That’s where the One-on-One page comes in handy. It’s the perfect go-to resource for finding out what we offer, what you might need, and who can help you get it.

Scenario 3: You want to meet with Christie or Katherine to talk about your resume and clean it up and sit and chat with them because they’re cool chicks. But there aren’t any appointments available at the moment that work for you. And you were going to turn it in TOMORROW. Oh no…

We’ve got you covered. We have a page of Resume Guides to help get you started, including a very cool video tutorial. But do remember that Christie has walk-in hours on Tuesday from 3-5 and Wednesday from 12-2, and Katherine has walk-ins on Tuesday and Wednesday from 2-4.

Scenario 4: You’ve been sent several places now in search of internship information and you just want to know if you can get credit for it or not! It feels like you’re running in circles!

Check out our Internship Info page. It lists the internship coordinators for each academic department and which majors they work with. Everything that you need to get started on figuring out an internship is right there for you.

Scenario 5: You WISH you were a graphic design wiz but, alas, like me, you are not. You need to make things look cool and professional and you want to meet with our student graphic designers. Before you come in, go check out…

The Request Form! If you come in and visit me at the front desk and ask to schedule an appointment with a graphic designer, this is exactly where I’ll send you. Not saying you shouldn’t come visit me. I’m just sayin. There it is!

Scenario 6: You want to attend one of our incredibly informative sessions. Or want to know what’s coming up. And maybe you’re a little forgetful once you sign up for things and would like a reminder. This is why you should always register through…

Eventbrite! All of the Portfolio Center events are posted here. It helps us know how many to expect and it helps you to remember that it’s happening! You can even log in through your Facebook. It’s very convenient. Don’t you forget it.

Those are just a few spots to get you started. Keep track of them. Bookmark them. Write them down. Dream about them. Tell your friends about them. Obsess over them a little bit but not too much because obsession can be a toxic behavior and we want you to be happy.

Hopefully this helps you find a couple of things that you need.

So until next Monday…

“No, you can’t always get what you want. But if you try sometimes, you just might find, you get what you need.”
