Course Spotlight: AEMMP Hip-Hop
The AEMMP Hip-Hop label hit the ground running this semester with re-branding, signing new artists, and more. AEMMP Hip-Hop is truly distinguishing itself as a top student-run record label in the country.
This semester the Hip-Hop section of the AEMMP Record Label: Practicum course is led by Alex Fruchter, co-founder of Closed Sessions. Alex is a pioneer in the Chicago Hip-Hop scene and provides guidance and expert advice for students running the label.
AEMMP Hip Hop focuses on building relationships with many local artists and supporting them through management, publicity, and artistic development. This semester, they met with On Gaud, a Producing Group, who may be their first group to sign on with the label this semester. Follow AEMMP Hip-Hop online for the official news announcement. The label is also taking all submissions from artists who are interested in working with them. This can be done via email, their website, or twitter.
The latest addition to the label is the brand ambassadors concept for interested students not taking the class. AEMMP Hip-Hop is building a marketing and promotions team of Columbia student brand ambassadors that will help spread awareness about their artists and events. The first brand ambassadors meeting was held on October 23rd. This program offers marketing experience, a path to the Chicago music scene, and networking opportunities.
The AEMMP Record Label: Practicum course provides students with an experiential learning opportunity operating a student-run record label. Students will work collaboratively on the development and management of music projects that include finding potential artists and repertoire, contract negotiation, production, marketing, and distribution. Students enrolled in spring semester sections of this course participate in activities at South-by-Southwest (SXSW) in Austin, TX.
