Chicago’s 2012 Cultural Plan Initiative
AEMM is proud to report that it has been asked to contribute to the City of Chicago’s 2012 Cultural Plan Initiative.
AEMM’s Cultural Policy classes will work in close collaboration with the City’s planning team to support its research effort, and AEMM will host the first public planning meeting on February 15, in Stage 2 (618 South Michigan) from 6:00 to 8:00.
All Columbia’s students, faculty and staff are encouraged to attend this meeting. It will be a unique opportunity to see the process of cultural policy making up close, understand its dynamics, think deeply about what we believe the plan should include, and even participate directly in the process. Most importantly, it will be an opportunity to show the role that Columbia plays in the culture of our city.
The Cultural Plan will aim at answering the following questions: how can Chicago develop and sustain a robust cultural life over the next ten to twenty years? What are the principles that describe a ‘robust cultural life?’ What are the most important issues that need attention? What are the resources that we need to develop? Where should be place our priorities? What steps need to be taken to get where we want to be in the next ten to twenty years?
The last cultural plan was developed in 1986 under Mayor Harold Washington by Fred Fine, Chicago’s first Commissioner of Culture and founder of the AEMM department.
