Hale Ekinci, Kökess (bottom of triptych)

Midway through Chicago Artists’ Month 2013, Hale Ekinci needs more than two arms to point people in all the different directions her work is on display. Starting on October 6, she was one of the featured artists at the Art Depth Goddess event at the Crimson Lounge, and three of her ink illustrations on wood are featured in the follow-up online exhibition of the same name. Her work can also be seen in the curated Alumni on 5 Exhibition The Start of Something, which just opened this past Friday, and runs though the fall in the CCC Library’s fifth floor gallery.

Immediately after the Alumni on 5 opening, the site-specific installation she was selected to create for the Essanay Studios opens for the weekend of Open House Chicago, a city-wide festival organized by the Chicago Architecture Foundation that gives the public special “behind the scenes” peeks at 150 intriguing buildings and historically important spaces throughout Chicago and Pullman. Ekinci’s video work Being Charlie Chaplin is a three-channel video installation deconstructing one of Chaplin’s popular silent movies, His New Job, that was made at Essanay. Her work opens up a visual void in the classic Chaplin movie, allowing viewers to insert their own story into the mix. And, in the midst of generating this impressive creative output, Ekinci was recently named the Interdisciplinary Media Studies Program Coordinator at North Central College in Naperville, where she is currently Assistant Professor of Art.
