The Columbia College Chicago Theatre Department proudly congratulates Columbia Theatre alum Cavan Hallman ’05, a graduate of the Theatre Department’s Playwriting program and founder/producing artistic director of the Mirrorbox Theatre in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Four years after the theatre was founded, Hallman and his troupe have signed a long-term lease for a new home in Cedar Rapids’ historic Time Check neighborhood.

“Four years ago this week I was riding high, giddy from the outpouring of enthusiasm we received with the opening of our very first show, Ike Holter’s Exit Strategy,” Hallman said in a recent email to Mirrorbox supporters. “In case I thought the joy couldn’t be any greater, here we are, having officially signed a long-term lease for our new home at 1200 Ellis Blvd. NW. . . . It’s hard to predict what the word will be in contemporary theatre when 2032 comes around, but after today, we can say with certainty that Mirrorbox will not only be contributing to, but leading that conversation from our new home in Cedar Rapids. We can’t wait for you to join us!”

Founded in 2018, Mirrorbox is the only theatre company exclusively dedicated to presenting contemporary plays in their Iowa premieres. The troupe has presented 12 Iowa premiere productions as well as more than 50 readings, working with hundreds of artists and reaching audiences in half a dozen countries through both live and virtual performances. Hallman has frequently worked with other Columbia College alums in Mirrorbox presentations, including Curtis M. Jackson ’08, a graduate of the Theatre Department’s BA Program in Acting; Aaron Reese Boseman ‘12, a graduate of the Theatre Department’s Theatre Directing program; and Hallman’s former teacher, Columbia College Theatre Department alum and faculty member Stephanie Shaw ’92, MFA ’09.
