Neff plays the lead role of Mae, a brokenhearted and unemployed young woman, who returns home to care for her ailing father (played by Francis Guinan) and escape the loneliness of a life that just can’t seem to get off the ground. Both Neff and Guinan are Steppenwolf ensemble members. Neff — who came to Chicago from her native Texas in 2004 to study at Columbia College Chicago — previously starred at Steppenwolf in the Chicago premiere of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play The Flick. Other Steppenwolf productions she’s appeared in include Airline Highway , in which she made her Broadway debut in 2015. She is also casting director and an ensemble member of Chicago’s Steep Theatre, and won a 2011 Joseph Jefferson Award (Actress in a Principal Role/Play) for her performance in Steep’s A Brief History of Helen of Troy.
The show is directed by former Columbia College Theatre Department teacher Jonathan Berry. Former Columbia College Theatre Department student Sasha Smith is the show’s intimacy choreographer, and former Theatre Department faculty member Gigi Buffington is Steppenwolf’s company vocal coach.
