Congratulations to Columbia College Chicago Theatre Department alumnus Marvin Quijada ’05, a graduate of the Theatre Department’s BA Program in Acting, whose play The Dream King was honored at the 2023 Joseph Jefferson Awards ceremony on Monday, October 2, 2023 at Drury Lane Theatre in the Chicago suburb of Oakbrook. The Equity “Jeff Awards,” Chicago’s top theatre award, were presented by the Joseph Jefferson Awards Committee to honor excellence in Chicago’s Equity theatre during the 2022-2023 theatre season.
Actor-playwright-composer Quijada, who was recently featured in a profile in American Theatre magazine, was a triple nominee in the categories of Performer in a Principal Role/Play, New Work, and Original Music in a Play. He won in all three categories.
In addition, the show’s lighting designer – Columbia College alum Conchita Avitia ’18, a graduate of the Theatre Department’s BA Program in Theatre Design – was honored in the category of Lighting Design/Midsize.
And Teatro Vista’s world premiere production of the play at the Chopin Theatre was honored in the categories of Production/Play (Mid-size), Scenic Design, Sound Design, and Puppet Design.
In addition, Shattered Globe Theatre’s U.S. premiere of London Road at Theatre Wit won in the category of Production/Musical (Mid-size). As previously reported in this blog, that show included several Columbia College Theatre Department alumni, students, and faculty in its cast and creative team.
