Columbia College Chicago Theatre Department alum and former faculty member Joanie Schultz ’00, a graduate of the Theatre Department’s Theatre Directing program, is directing the East Coast premiere of her one-act adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s classic drama A Doll’s House, running September 3 through 28 at the Everyman Theatre in Baltimore, Maryland. Schultz previously directed her play at the WaterTower Theatre in Addison, Texas, in 2018, when she was artistic director there. In a promotional video posted by the Everyman Theatre, Schultz discusses her vision of A Doll’s House, a controversial shocker when it premiered in Denmark in 1879.

As previously reported in this blog, Schultz joined the Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, one of the nation’s top regional theatres, as associate artistic director in 2021.

The production’s scenic designer is former Columbia College Theatre Department faculty member Chelsea M. Warren, now a professor at the Carnegie Mellon University School of Drama, who also designed the play’s production at WaterTower Theatre.

Offering a fresh perspective on Ibsen’s timeless classic, Schultz’s 90-minute adaptation of A Doll’s House invites audiences to engage with updated themes of gender, power, and identity while holding true to the playwright’s original intentions.
