Fighting Words and Gladiator Gods: Columbia College Chicago Theatre Department Alums Perform Stage Combat Shows June 24 and 25

Alumni of the Columbia College Chicago Theatre Department‘s nationally recognized Stage Combat Program are taking center stage in two productions that celebrate the art of theatrical combat the weekend of June 24 and 25, 2023. The Babes With Blades Theatre Company’s Fighting Words festival is available both in person and via online streaming, with performances Saturday and Sunday, June 24 and 25, at The Edge Off Broadway, located at 1133 W. Catalpa in Chicago’s Edgewater Andersonville Theatre District. The festival is free. For tickets and more information, click here. And the Point Theatre Project‘s Gladiator Fight Night Returns: Battle of the Gods!, an interactive theatrical performance, takes place Sunday, June 25, at 7:30 PM at The Hive On Hubbard, 1843 W. Babes With Blades’ Fighting Words Festival features readings of three new scripts in development that utilize stage combat to tell stories of underrepresented communities. The plays and their performance times are: Sin Agua – Saturday, June 24, 2:30 PM; Rich B*tch – Saturday, June 24, 7:30 PM; and The Gatekeepers – Sunday, June 25, 2:30 PM. After each reading the audience has an opportunity to provide feedback for the playwright. Live streaming is available for the June 24 and 25 readings. Admission is FREE online and in person. The performing ensemble for the Fighting Words Festival includes Columbia College alums Kim Fukawa ’07, Brandi Jiminez Lee ’15, and Kathrynne Wolf ’96, all graduates of the Theatre Department’s BA Program in Acting. Columbia College alum Amy Gerwert Valdez ’21, a graduate of the Theatre Department’s Theatre Directing program, is the director of Sin Agua.

The Point Theatre Project’s Gladiator Fight Night: Battle of the Gods! is an interactive theatrical performance where the audience gets to select their favorite fighters and determine who progresses into the next round. The event includes drinks, raffle prizes, and lots of stage violence! Watch as the gods fight one another for the title of Supreme Diety. Cheer loudly for your favorite fighters, boo the rest, or maybe win your chance to reign as Emperor for the night and have the final say on who takes the title.
