The Columbia College Chicago Theatre Department proudly congratulates the Columbia College alums and faculty members who have been selected to receive 2021 Make a Wave grants from the Chicago-based nonprofit grant-making organization 3Arts. The grant recipients were announced October 18, 2021.
3Arts is a nonprofit organization that supports Chicago’s women artists, artists of color, and Deaf and disabled artists who work in the performing, teaching, and visual arts. Make a Wave is an artist-to-artist giving program that erases the traditional gatekeeper by inviting each of the previous year’s 3Arts Award recipients to select another artist to receive a surprise grant from 3Arts—in effect sending a wave through Chicago’s brilliant cultural core.
The 2021 Make a Wave Artists will receive $4,000 each, based on the recommendations of all past 3Arts Award recipients. This year’s award recipients include:
Columbia College alum Hannah Ii-Epstein ’15, a graduate of the college’s fiction writing program. She is a creative writer, dramatist, and — with her wife, Columbia alum Anna Rose Ii-Epstein ’07, a graduate of the Theatre Department’s Acting program — co-founder and co-artistic director of Nothing Without a Company, a theatre group devoted to creating theatre in non-traditional spaces and environments throughout different neighborhoods in the Chicago area.
Columbia alum Marvin Quijada, ’05, a graduate of the Theatre Department’s BA Program in Acting, and former Columbia College Theatre Department student Isaiah Robinson, a vocalist, musician, and teaching artist. Both Robinson and Quijada are members of the Silent Theatre Company, an ensemble founded and led by Columbia College Chicago Theatre Department alumni.
Columbia alum and former faculty member Joanie Schultz ’00, a graduate of the Theatre Department’s Theatre Directing program. As previously reported in this blog, Joanie Schultz was recently named associate artistic director of the Cincinnati Playhouse, one of the nation’s top regional theatres.
Dance Center of Columbia College Chicago alum Aaliyah Christina, ’16, a graduate of the Dance Center’s BA Program in Dance, and Dance Center faculty member Jyl Fehrenkamp (Jyldo).
