Now in its second season, Mirrorbox Theatre was founded by Cavan Hallman, a graduate of the Columbia College Theatre Department’s Playwriting program. Mirrorbox produces Iowa-premiere plays as dramatic reflections on contemporary culture. The company embraces practical theatricality within an intimate setting, illuminating new thinking through new writing that is relevant to our modern lives.

Future Thinking concerns Peter, a middle-aged fanboy determined to deliver a vital and mysterious message to Chiara, the young star of his favorite television show. Desperation drives Peter to violate his restraining order so he can fulfill this destiny at Comic Con. Chiara, meanwhile, is holed up in a hotel room, doing battle with her controlling “Mom-ager,” a Kris Jenner-like Svengali figure. Peter and Chiara both comically butt against the boundaries of authority and reality as they move toward a fateful and surprisingly touching meeting. The play was included in the 2014 Kilroys List, an annual survey of outstanding new plays by female and trans writers. Clark’s plays have been developed at Manhattan Theatre Club, Yale University, and South Coast Repertory in California, where Future Thinking was produced in 2016.

Future Thinking runs June 6 through 8 at Legion Arts at historic CSPS Hall in downtown Cedar Rapids, Iowa. For tickets, click here.
