Columbia College Chicago Theatre Department alumni are in the cast and production team of Crumbs From the Table of Joy, running October 4 through November 18 at Raven Theatre in Chicago’s Edgewater Theatre District. The drama by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Lynn Nottage concerns an African-American family in 1950 Brooklyn. The family’s father, Godfrey, is played by Columbia College alum Terence Sims ’13, and his daughter Ermina is played by alum Brandi Jiminez Lee ’15; both are graduates of the Theatre Department’s BA Program in Acting. The show’s choreographer, Jon Martinez, is a former student in the Theatre Department’s Musical Theatre Program.
Raven Theatre’s artistic director is Columbia College alum Cody Estle ’11, a graduate of the Theatre Department’s Theatre Directing program. “Lynn Nottage is a prolific writer and her work is a gift to all who encounter it,” says Estle. “Crumbs from the Table of Joy examines a family experiencing change in a country filled with racial and social turmoil. Audiences will connect with the struggles of this family, while getting a glimpse into a time in our past whose complexity resembles that of today.”
