Actor/comedian Willy J. Sasso (BA ’14), a graduate of the Columbia College Chicago Theatre Department‘s BA Program in Comedy Writing and Performance, is the co-creator and co-star of an online sketch show called The Drew & Bill Show. The web series was created with Sasso’s longtime friend and collaborator Drew Byerly. Sasso and Byerly write, direct, shoot, edit, and act in the videos, which are posted on the comedy website Funnyordie and on Youtube. One episode of the series has been featured on Funnyordie’s home page.

“The fantastic thing about the Internet is that you can just film something and put it up online,” says Sasso. “That’s the advice I hear most often — don’t wait around for someone to ask you to do something. Just do the work you like to do, and trust it will take you to where you need to go.”

Friends since their high school days in Colorado, Sasso and Byerly recently moved to the Pasadena area and were looking for a creative outlet, so they started filming weekly sketches. “We’ve always loved making comedy together,” says Sasso. “And once we moved out to California, we figured it would be a great way to force us to write come up with new ideas every week.”

Sasso and Byerly also co-wrote, directed, and starred in a feature film titled Found Footage, which is a satire about three boys who try to solve their school’s bullying problem by staging their own personal “Hunger Games.” Found Footage is currently being shopped around in search of a distribution deal.

“Drew and I have always liked coming up with funny ideas, getting a camera, and shooting it. Sometimes that’s through writing or making a film, other times it’s just through making a quick little sketch,” says Sasso. “But we just love making each other laugh, and creating together. And if other people find us funny too, well, then, that never hurts.”

Columbia College’s Bachelor of Arts in Comedy Writing and Performance program is a collaborative partnership between the college’s Theatre, Television, and Business and Entrepreneurship departments and The Second City, the nation’s premier comedy theatre and training center.
