DEADLINE: August 10
Deep Breaths invites time-based works (video, audio/sound, performances) that use the breath as material or as a theoretical point of departure. Often relegated to a bodily function, this call seeks to broaden the breath’s expanse beyond the physical and asks artists to consider other ways to engage the breath. Some initial points of departure:
air columns
an opening of space / making room
a pause
relief
registration of mortality
invisible presence / ghosts
an exchange of contents
All time-based works will be considered, though pieces under 12 minutes are preferred. The current space is able to accommodate 2 channel audio and single channel projection works, though special consideration will be given to projects needing other equipment, funds pending. Artists engaged in interactive technology should feel welcome to apply, though artists must be able to submit a working version of their patch/program, provide their own machine, or be present for the performance.
Please note that any performance-based works or works that need the artist to operate (program-based works/interactive projects) must be willing/able to travel to Chicago, though sadly, there is no travel stipend for artists outside of Chicago. Selected artists will be compensated a nominal fee for their work, dependent on admission and attendance.
Submissions are due by August 10, 2015 11:59 pm EST.
Please provide up to 3 link(s) to work (vimeo, youtube, soundcloud, etc), a CV and artist statement to criticalexpanse [at] gmail [dot] com.
This program will take place in Chicago on August 20 at the Arc Gallery as part of the Karras Performance Festival and is curated by Alejandro T. Acierto.
