Using type and material in the shop we discover in a hands-on fashion how early American printers achieved striking and distinctive effects in their bookwork with limited resources. We will recreate pages from 18th century American books using type and ornament in the studio and learn how expedients, such as decorative material made out of punctuation, came to the aid of the early typographers in the American colonies. We will also explore how these strictures created a distinctly American aesthetic, manifest later in the work of Updike, Rollins and Dwiggins, three of the most noted American designers of the first half of the twentieth century.

Boxmaking is an extremely useful tributary of bookbinding craft. Using the same techniques and materials as bookbinding, boxmaking also utilizes simple principles of joinery to create housings that protect work and reinforce content. In this introductory workshop, we will complete a clamshell box “kit” provided by the instructor. Learn the key skills of precision cutting and covering, mitering and proper laminating. This systematic, formula-based approach is well-suited to producing either one-of-a-kind boxes or editioned work.

Learn techniques for producing multi-featured boxes. This workshop will allow participants to create their own box from scratch – we will explore alternative tongue and groove spine attachments, recessed panels, false round spines and laminated, step-jointed walls. Participants should be able to create one box or, alternatively, a packet of samples for future reference.
