Alumni and students of the Columbia College Chicago Theatre Department‘s Musical Theatre Program are featured in the classic musical Gypsy, presented by Chicago’s Porchlight Music Theatre October 12 through November 25.
The show’s cast includes current Columbia College students Aalon Smith, Marvin J. Malone II, and Ariel Triunfo. Smith plays “Dainty June,” a teenage performer whose stage-struck mother is trying to make her talented daughter a star in 1920s vaudeville. Malone and Triunfo are in the ensemble, and Triunfo is also the production’s dance captain.
Also in the cast are Columbia College alumni Elya Faye Bottiger ’17 and Michelle Huey ’17, both graduates of the Columbia College Theatre Department’s BFA Program in Musical Theatre Performance, and Jared David Michael Grant ’12, a graduate of the Theatre Department’s BA Program in Musical Theatre.
Gypsy, a hit on Broadway in 1959 and in numerous revivals over the years, is written by lyricist Stephen Sondheim, composer Jule Styne, and playwright Arthur Laurents. It’s based on the true Depression-era story of child vaudeville performers Louise and June Hovick, sisters who grew up to become striptease artist Gypsy Rose Lee and actress June Havoc.
Gypsy plays at the Ruth Page Center for the Arts, 1016 N. Dearborn, Chicago. For tickets, click here.
