Columbia College Chicago Theatre alum Tyler Anthony Smith ’17, a graduate of the Theatre Program’s BA Program in Acting, is the author and star of Hell in a Handbag Productions‘ world premiere Queen for a Day, running July 9 through August 3 at the Bramble Arts Loft, located at 5545 N. Clark in Chicago’s Andersonville neighborhood. For tickets, click here.
The show’s cast also features Columbia College alum Dakota Hughes ’15, a graduate of the Theatre Program’s BFA Program in Musical Theatre Performance.
The campy comedy, set in 1984 New York City, imagines an encounter between celebrity fashion designer Halston, singer Liza Minnelli (played by Hughes), and England’s Queen Elizabeth I (played by Smith).
The show is directed by Columbia College Chicago School of Theatre and Dance alum and faculty member Stephanie Shaw ’92 (Theatre), MFA ’09 (Creative Writing).
As previously reported in this blog, Smith won a 2024 Joseph Jefferson (“Jeff”) Award for their performance in Haven Chicago’s production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, and Hughes won a 2023 Jeff Award for their performance in Hell in a Handbag Productions’ Frankenstreisand, also written by Smith.
