Columbia College Chicago Theatre Department alumni are in the cast and production team of The Bardy Bunch: The War of the Families Partridge and Brady, an Off-Broadway hit musical receiving its Chicago premiere September 15–November 27 at the Mercury Theater, 3745 N. Southport, Chicago.
The Bardy Bunch is a musical parody mash-up of a dozen Shakespeare plays, set in the 1970s and featuring the warring sitcom families, the Bradys and the Partridges. They sing. They dance. They tell corny sitcom jokes and they kill each other in acts of jealousy, vengeance and rage. The show features songs made famous on The Partridge Family and The Brady Bunch, including “I Think I Love You,” “It’s a Sunshine Day,” and other groovy hits! The show premiered at the 2011 New York International Fringe Festival and went on to play a sold-out Off-Broadway run at the Theatre at St. Clement’s in the spring of 2014.
The Chicago premiere of The Bardy Bunch co-stars Columbia College Chicago Theatre alum Callie Johnson ’12, a graduate of the Theatre Department’s BFA Program in Musical Theatre Performance. Johnson (whose other Chicago-area stage credits include Next to Normal at Drury Lane Oakbrook, the title role in Bailiwick Chicago’s production of Carrie: The Musical, and a Joseph Jefferson Award-winning cameo in Porchlight Music Theatre’s Pal Joey) plays Cindy Partridge.
Columbia alumni on the show’s creative team include set designer Grant Sabin ’05 and lighting designer Claire Chrzan ’11. And alumnus Jason Epperson ’14, president of the Chicago production company Lotus Theatricals, is the show’s general manager. Sabin, Chrzan, and Epperson are all graduates of the Columbia College Theatre Department’s Theatre Design Program.
