Columbia College Chicago Theatre Department associate professor Amy Uhl is joining the Broadway company of the new musical Amazing Grace, which opens July 17 at the Nederlander Theatre in New York. Uhl is a coordinator of Columbia College’s Musical Theatre Program, which offers both a BA in Musical Theatre and a BFA in Musical Theatre Performance. She will be assisting director Gabriel Barre and associate director Kim Weild on Amazing Grace‘s Broadway production, as she did on the show’s world premiere engagement in Chicago at the Bank of America Theatre in October 2014. Uhl was awarded a Society of Directors and Choreographers observership on the Chicago production, presented by Broadway In Chicago.
With a score by Christopher Smith and a book by Arthur Giron and Smith, Amazing Grace is based on the life of 18th-century Englishman John Newton, a slave trader-turned-abolitionist clergyman who is best remembered as the man who wrote the immortal hymn “Amazing Grace.” The show stars Josh Young as Newton.
Rehearsals for Amazing Grace‘s New York production start May 20, and previews begin at the Nederlander on June 25.
