Early reviews have been raves for the Columbia College Theatre Department folks involved in Jackalope Theatre’s Four and The Hypocrites’ Endgame.
The cast of Four features student Michael Kurowski and alumnus Daniel Martinez, and the show’s set is designed by alumnus Mike Mroch. “It’s hard to imagine another company giving [playwright Christopher Shinn’s] play this kind of inspired treatment,” wrote Chicago Stage Standard’s Kevin Greene, who praised “the unparalleled excellence of the cast” and “technical brilliance of the scenic design (courtesy Mike Mroch)” and called the show “a consummate work of art from a theatre on the make.”
Four also got a positive review from Stage and Cinema’s Lawrence Bommer.
And Chicago Sun-Times critic Hedy Weiss’ rave review for the Hypocrites’ staging of Samuel Beckett’s absurdist classic Endgame singled out Columbia Theatre teacher and alumnus Brian Shaw for his performance: “Brian Shaw . . . moves like a dancer-acrobat,” Weiss wrote, adding that his “trips up and down a step-ladder are alone worth the price of admission.” Weiss called the production “unique and wonderful.”
