Columbia College Chicago’s new 2-Year MFA Photography Program is a highly challenging and adventurous program that honors the traditions of photography while encouraging innovation of contemporary photomedia practice. Graduate students pursue an individualized, self-directed course of investigation that culminates in a thesis exhibition.

Our program respects and encourages a diverse range of practices, and is guided by distinguished graduate faculty and art professionals. Students have opportunities to be advised by such legends of photography as Dawoud Bey, Kelli Connell, Paul D’Amato and Judy Natal.

In conjunction with four semesters of creative inquiry into their thesis project, students complete course work in the history, theory, and practice of photography. State of the art studio environments underpin students’ exploration into the ways in which photography intersects a wide range of technologies and media.

The MFA in Photography path of discovery is enriched by the support of The Museum of Contemporary Photography and a vibrant Lecture in Photography series that has featured Carrie Mae Weems, Quentin Bajac, Roger Ballen, Edward Byrtynsky, Rachel Sussman, Walead Beshty, John Gossage, Alec Soth, Mickalene Thomas, Deborah Luster and Todd Hido.
