Creative Writing – Poetry MFA
I am a recent VONA alum and a first-year student in the Creative Writing–Poetry MFA program. Favorite pastimes involve traveling and trying new food.
TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT WHAT YOU WERE DOING BEFORE YOU CAME TO COLUMBIA.
Before attending Columbia, I completed my undergraduate studies at Northeastern Illinois University, earning a BA in English with a minor in Creative Writing. I was also a new Voices of Our Nations Art Foundation (VONA/Voices) fellow and I completed a Poetry Residency during the summer, which was held in Berkeley, CA.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE COLUMBIA FOR YOUR GRADUATE STUDY?
I knew Columbia was the place for me to be after doing my own research on graduate school programs and seeing how diverse the program faculty and staff was; furthermore, the program at Columbia offered more hands-on opportunities in my field that goes behind simply sitting in a classroom.
TELL US ABOUT A PROJECT YOU’RE WORKING ON THAT YOU’RE EXCITED ABOUT.
Currently, I am working on a full-length poetry manuscript that centers arounds the themes of Latinx culture and identity.
