Welcome, Kubilay Uner

Kubilay Uner

The newest addition to our faculty this year is LA based film and television composer, Kubilay Uner. He comes as a successful and diverse composer, with credits to his name ranging from full length feature films to television pilots, as well as concert works. His focus here at Columbia College will consist of teaching Digital Orchestration for the first year students and Scoring III and IV for the second years.

Kubi’s has worked with Michael Polish on Big Sur and For Lovers Only. He also created a film competition called FILM2MUSIC, where Kubi invited filmmakers from across the world to create a film to accompany a track off his album “Cinematic.” In a sense, this is the opposite of traditional scoring, as the filmmaker must find inspiration from the music to create the visual. The winning contestants had their films shown at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival.

Field Trip During Our First Class

With his work, Kubi loves to record live instruments and sample custom instruments, and to create a one of a kind palette. For our scoring work, he is encouraging us to record our own instruments and classmates as much as possible. My cohort has a great range of instrumental experience, ranging from clarinet, classical guitar, violin, viola, to trumpet and voice. This will be a fun way to create some expressive melodic material to add to our portfolio and especially useful while getting ready for the three recording sessions next semester.

Although we only have had one class with Kubi, it is obvious that he has a wealth of knowledge, and is a very passionate and caring person. Welcome Kubi, and we all very much look forward to working with you this year. Take a listen to Kubi’s work below.
