Join us for our Constitution Day program, “Census 2020: Why it Matters” on Tuesday, September 17th from 1:30-3:00pm in the Third Floor North Reading Room. Columbia Central is co-sponsor of this event.
Since 1790, the U.S. Constitution has required that electoral districts be periodically adjusted or redrawn to account for population shifts. Every ten years, data collected from Census surveys reveal where populations have risen or fallen and is used for congressional representation as well as federal funding for states and communities. However, the confidentiality of that data has become a major concern for many in recent times, especially within immigrant populations.
Marilyn Sanders, Regional Director of the U.S. Census Bureau will be joined by Jeanine Beasley, Partnership Specialist, Chicago Region, U.S. Census Bureau to discuss the history of the Census, the upcoming Census 2020, and the importance of participation, especially by young people.
