Fashion studies majors: Learn about a fashion history-maker’s work without feeling like you’ve hit the books

Studying fashion at Columbia? Teaching in Fashion Studies here?

Maybe you’re using the history of fashion from a certain time period as a subject for a creative project or for an assignment in a literature class. Maybe you’re just obsessed with fashion and how it has evolved over time.

Whichever way you fit the bill, let me introduce you to a fresh take on fashion history (and a history-maker within fashion design): Girl in Dior, a graphic novel by Annie Goetzinger released in 2015.

Here’s what a Graphic Novel Reporter reviewer has to say about Girl in Dior:

“Goetzinger’s art and narrative cleverly weave a biography, delivered by a narrator whose naiveté rivals our own at the start of this book. Lovingly illustrated — and even more lovingly constructed — the narrative expresses the importance of Christian Dior and why he deserves to be well-remembered. Having only read this book, I can say I have a much greater respect for Dior, his brand, his art, and his unflinching genius.”

How to get your hands on it: You can request this graphic novel from another library in Illinois using I-Share or buy it at Comixology.com. When using I-Share to have the book sent to Columbia College Library, you will need to set up an account (takes only a moment).

If doing so, take note: The barcode requested on the setup screen is the actual barcode that you will find on the back of your Columbia ID card. Once you’re logged in as a bonafide Columbia College Chicago student, a title search will bring up the record for the book, where you can “Request Item” (situated in a tab below the information about the book).

If you have trouble with creating an account or the process of requesting a book:
1) chat with a librarian (on www.library.colum.edu); 2) email a librarian (good option after-hours); 3) Give them a ring (312.369.7900); 4) or visit the Frequently Asked Questions page (found on the library’s homepage, below the search window).

The publisher, NBM Graphic Novels, calls this work a “biography docudrama” because the story focuses on a fictional character whose experiences share about the life and work of legendary designer Christian Dior.
