7 Tips for New and Returning Students

Your campus card is your library card! Use your Columbia ID to enter the library, check out books, movies, scores, and CDs, and use online databases, ebooks, films, and articles.

Turn your digital designs into tangible objects. The library’s Maker Lab has 3D printers and a vinyl cutter and is open to all students, faculty, and staff. Appointments are required, please request at least 1-2 days in advance.

Save money. We have your textbooks! The library has copies of any required textbook that cost more than $40. Ask for your textbook at the desk on the 1st Floor of the library.

Ask a Librarian. Need help finding a book, film, or article? Our friendly librarians are expert researchers! Ask us for help if you get stuck on an academic or creative project. You can chat with us, email us, call us, text us, tweet usschedule a research consultation, or stop by the Ask Desk on the 2nd Floor to discuss your questions in-person!

Borrow equipment instead of buying it. We have GoPros, DSLR cameras, camcorders, digital audio recorders, projectors, phone chargers, headphones, laptops, therapy lights, two-way radios, USB microphones, portable magnifiers, DSLR lenses, SD cards, button makers, and lightboxes. Equipment check out is first-come, first-serve. Loan times vary.

Schedule small group and student organization meetings in the library. We have a variety of rooms that can be reserved in advance including study rooms, meeting rooms, and event spaces. Library spaces can be reserved through the college’s space reservation system, EMS.

We have the longest hours of any space on campus. This includes being open until 10pm, Monday through Thursday, and we are open all weekend. Visit us any of these hours!
