TV Review: The Rain

TV Review: The Rain

It is not what you think. This 2018 Netflix Original drama is a Danish post-apocalyptic whirlwind that explores the lives of 2 siblings (Simone and Rasmus) after a rain that carries a virus wipes out the majority of the population, and how they go on an adventure with a group to help figure out a cure. I know, it’s a doosy. The original audio for the show is in Danish, as the show is set in Scandinavia. For some, subtitles aren’t their cup of tea, but don’t you worry Netflix has an English dub too.

Here’s a better description of the premise:
This show is good, but drawn out a bit. Over the course of the first season you get the gist of the situation and how it came to be, but no true satisfaction is felt until the last 2 episodes of the season. There are only 2 seasons of the show so far, but they will leave you wanting more. The genre is mostly sci-fi/drama, which is to be expected from the premise, but what you don’t see coming are vibes of romance, horror, and superhero. Yeah, that’s right, superhero (or villain..muahaha). Since the show starts in the middle of a messed up situation, it should be warned that there are tons of flashback scenes. They are used for a good purpose of course but there are a lot of them. The writing, cinematography, and acting in this show is great! All of those elements really draw you in and help elevate the suspense of the situation as a whole, but it gets so much more intense in season 2.

The cast stars Alba August and Lucas Lynggaard Tonnesen as sibling duo Simone and Rasmus. They play these characters to a T , and with so much emotion. Mikkel Folsgaard plays Martin, Simone’s love interest and leader of the backpacker group. And Sonny Lindberg and Jessica Dinnage play the will they/ won’t they adorable duo Lea and Jean.

Rating: 7/10 Pretty good, but could be better.
