Eastman School of Music
Position Announcement
Composer/Director of the Beal Institute for Film Music and Contemporary Media

The Eastman School of Music of the University of Rochester seeks a composer with expertise in film music and other contemporary media for a full-time, tenure eligible faculty position in the Jazz and Contemporary Media department beginning in the fall semester 2017. Rank and salary will be commensurate with experience.

The ideal candidate will have an established career and a national/international profile as a composer, predominantly of music for film, television, electronic games, and/or other electronic media. Additionally, candidates must have experience managing multi-faceted projects in which collaboration with multiple constituencies was required. Teaching experience at the collegiate level is desirable, as is experience conducting their works, and/or the works of others.

70% of the responsibilities involve overseeing a newly established Master of Music degree in Contemporary Media/Film Composition, and teaching graduate courses in the area of the candidate’s expertise. 30% of the responsibilities involve directing the newly established Beal Institute for Film Studies and Contemporary Media, established with a gift by film composer Jeff Beal and his wife Joan. The Beal Institute is intended to be an incubator of creative, collaborative, and interdisciplinary initiatives designed to advance the study and performance of film music and contemporary media at the Eastman School of Music. Given the full-time nature of these responsibilities, candidates must be willing to reside in Rochester and invest in the musical community of the Eastman School of Music.

Review of applications begins November 14, 2016. To receive full consideration, please submit a letter of application, curriculum vitae, three current letters of recommendation from prominent individuals knowledgeable about the film/television/gaming industries, and a recording or digital video file of film/television/game/or contemporary media compositions with the subject Beal Director Search via attachment to BealDirectorSearch@esm.rochester.edu.

The Eastman School of Music seeks to create a musical community that is rich with cultural, social, and intellectual diversity.
