Department: Moving Image Production
Position: Narrative Film Making
Rank: Assistant to Full Professor
Description: The College of Arts and Sciences at The Ohio State University seeks a narrative filmmaker to become a full-time colleague beginning fall semester 2015 in conjunction with the emergent Moving Image Production (MIP) program. Students in the soon to be launched MIP program will develop a deep understanding in the areas of animation, documentary, experimental and narrative and the impact and use of this expanding form of expression. The position includes instruction of undergraduate courses from introductory to advanced levels of narrative film and video production, and advising graduate students in related programs. This is a tenure track position and is an open rank search.
We are looking for an energetic colleague interested in contributing to the planned new BFA in Moving Image Production, one based in knowledge of the multicultural, international, and interdisciplinary scope of moving-image creation and delivery. An appreciation of the importance of familiarizing students with the full range of artistic practice in filmmaking as well as a grounding in the history and study of cinematic traditions is a must. This position is central to the inception and growth of the MIP program with additional core faculty hires in a multi-year college level strategic plan over the next several years.
This new colleague will help to envision and reinforce the core of a dynamic new interdisciplinary degree program currently being developed in MIP building on the existing strengths in the arts and humanities, including the departments of Art, Dance, Design, English, Film Studies, Theatre, Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies, and others. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to participate with collaborative cross-disciplinary teams of faculty, staff and students who explore the application of moving image making as a research tool and mode of expression and communication including research opportunities and collaboration with the Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design (ACCAD), the Wexner Center for the Arts and departments in the College of Arts and Sciences. The teaching expectation is four courses per year.
Qualifications: The successful applicant will have a terminal degree in a field related to cinematic production or will have commensurate professional experience and success in the realm of narrative filmmaking. We are interested in applicants who have experience crafting narrative stories using visual media with a balanced work history of both the theoretical and the practical. The specific academic home department will align with the particular background and interests of the candidate.
