“Unmakers” Reception Today at 5:30 p.m. as part of “Evening at Columbia”

Don’t miss this opportunity to see the preview of works at the C33 Gallery in this exciting collaboration between the Interdisciplinary Arts and Creative Writing Departments. The nine artists in “We Become Each Other’s Unmakers” have been working together for several months, sharing materials, media, and concepts as they explore and “unmake” each other’s work. The reception will be from 5:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. as part of the “Evening at Columbia,” a series of openings and events in association with the College Art Association Annual Conference.

The preview on Thursday shows works in different stages of progress, with a variety of media: sculpture, performance, poetry, video, and sound are among the media to be shown in innovative combinations. The group will have another opening in March after works go through another stage of deconstruction. Some works are open to be to be manipulated on the spot by gallery-goers; other works call for public reworking through the sharing of digital files. Artists may also be looking for multiples to be made by others, or iterations, or additions to ongoing projects. Some may even ask for their work to be publicly destroyed and/or remade. The underlying concept is to explore creative process in new ways through interaction with other artists, and  looking the results together in what can normally be a relatively closed process. The Unmakers are opening it.
