2014 Media MFA alumna N. Davina’ Stewart’s book Imani and the Masquerade Slam is now being sold at the The DuSable Museum of African American History.
Primarily a writer and performance artist, Stewart creates counter-narratives to mainstream American representations of African Americans as inferior, utilizing her research skills and training to contextualize her socio-political reality in an effort to educate, challenge, and motivate.
Imani and the Masquerade Slam flips-the-script on the popular Cinderella fairytale and celebrates the power of poetry and the love of words through its magical, humorous, and unforgettable characters. In a desperate attempt to break free from the foster care system, Imani uses magic from her guardian angel to find the courage to compete in the Masquerade Slam.
